North Beacon Hill

Document Actions
In October 2002, North Beacon Hill was chosen as the first neighborhood to launch the neighborhoods initiative. Through discussions with the city and community members, it was determined that this neighborhood was an excellent choice to lead this effort. Culturally and economically diverse, Beacon Hill is known for potentially divisive issues. During the initial phase of the project, Sustainable Seattle worked with key city staff and community leaders to identify methods for choosing quality of life indicators at the neighborhood scale that would help inform the next phase of the project. This successful pilot led to the four-year effort funded by the Alfred P. Sloan foundation.

With the planning element of the Neighborhoods Initiative completed in July 2003, Sustainable Seattle began the next phase of its work by partnering with the North Beacon Hill Community Council.  Although it was originally thought that Sustainable Seattle would begin the four-year effort by helping community members conduct a visioning exercise to identify community priorities, Sustainable Seattle soon discovered that many people felt that, for the most part, neighborhood planning accomplished this and rather than do more of the same, were ready for real action.
