Uptown Street-Level Survey
Conducted on January 24th, 2006, the Uptown street-level survey focused on 4 commercial district streets: Roy, Mercer, Queen Anne Ave, and 1st Ave. N. The maps below show the six surveys planned: A1, A2, & A3 represent the positive "asset" condition routes and D1, D2, & D3 represent the "deficit" condition routes. Survey volunteers included members of the Uptown Alliance, Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce and local retired residents. All surveys were completed except for A3 due to insufficient volunteers. This survey will be conducted in the near future and the data will be updated on this page as soon as this is complete. As the maps show, volunteers surveyed four main arterials: Roy St, Mercer St, Queen Anne Ave. and 1st Ave. N. The Uptown neighborhood has a very busy commercial district with many restaurants, grocery stores, bars, shops, and is also the gateway to many of Seattle's public attractions. Mercer Street is also a main arterial to the I-5 freeway, creating a busy thoroughfare both for cars and pedestrians.
Findings of the January 24, 2006 street-level survey:
Community members collected assets & opportunities (what they liked and what they wanted) and deficits & concerns (what they didn't like and what they thought were problems) along the main commercial district of the Uptown neighborhood to document the positive and negative aspects of the physical environment of the area.

Asset Findings:
Asset Findings:
Table 1:

Table 1 above lists the most frequently collected positive conditions (assets) organized by feature. For example, most of the asset or opportunity incidents were identified along the sidewalk with 16 incidents collected. Community members found some of the sidewalks were clean, were good & safe for walking, and in two incidents, thought the business advertising board (sandwich board) was well displayed. The second most collected feature was businesses which were local, reflect the community and provide outside seating. Currently, 84 assets were collected by community members. Deficit Findings:
Table 2:

Table 2 above lists the most frequently collected negative conditions (deficits) organized by feature. Similar to the asset list in Table 1, community members collected the most deficit conditions along the sidewalk with 19 incidents collected, which includes uneven pavement concerns, litter, and opposite to the asset list where the sandwich board was displayed properly, in this case, another one was blocking. There were a total of 71 deficits or concerns collected by community members in the Uptown neighborhood on January 24th, 2006.
