International District February 2007

The fourth International District street-level survey was conducted over several days during February and March of 2007. The survey covered Chinatown and Little Saigon. The streets surveyed were: 6th Ave S from Airport Way S to Yesler Way; Maynard Ave S from S Charles St to S Main St; S Jackson, S King St and S Weller St from 5th Ave S to 8th Ave S; S Lane St from 6th Ave S to 7th Ave S; 7th Ave S and 8th Ave S from S Lane St to S Jackson St. The Little Saigon routes covered S Jackson St from I-5 to Boren Ave S; S King St from 8th Ave S to 12th Ave S; and 12th Ave S from S King St to Boren Ave S.

Table 1 above lists the most frequently collected positive conditions (assets) organized by feature.  For example, most of the asset or opportunity incidents were found in the Business category with 44 incidents collected businesses which are local-non-franchise and reflect the community.  The second most collected category were Building conditions with 19 incidents collected, buildings were in good condition.  Community members also discovered that the sidewalks in the neighborhood were clean and provided good and safe walking space.  Currently, community members have collected 162 assets in International District during February and March of 2007.  The volunteers collected more assets this year than previous years. Table 2 above lists the most frequently collected negative conditions (deficits) organized by feature.  78 sidewalk conditions were found.  A majority of the sidewalk conditions indicated uneven pavement and litter on the sidewalk.  There were 19 incidents of the roots heaving and causing uneven pavers making Tree Pits the second most frequently collected feature. Roadway conditions were the third most collected feature, there were 18 incidents of potholes and uneven pavement.  In total, there were 220 deficits or concerns collected by community members in the International District neighborhood during February and March of 2007.  For a complete list of all the deficits collected during this survey, click here.
