East Ballard November 18, 2006 Street Level Survey

Conducted on November 18, 2006, the East Ballard street-level survey focused primarily along 14th Ave NW, from Shilshole Ave NW on the south, north to NW 65th St. Additionally, NW Market St from 14th Ave NW to 15th Ave NW was also surveyed.

The maps above show the two surveys planned: A1 & A2 represent the positive "asset" condition routes and D1 & D2 represent the "deficit" condition routes. Survey volunteers included residents of the East Ballard neighborhood with help from Sustainable Seattle volunteers. Findings of the November 18th, 2006 street-level survey:

Community members collected deficits & concerns (what they didn't like and what they thought were problems) along the areas of the main business district of the East Ballard neighborhood.

Deficit Findings:

Table 1:



Table 1 above lists the most frequently collected negative conditions (deficits) organized by feature.  28 conditions were found in the sidewalk category.  A majority of the sidewalk conditions indicated uneven pavement and pavers damaged.  There were 14 incidents collected on planting strip. 14 median conditions were of concern due to the presence of litter, weeds and potholes.  There were also 12 incidents collected in tree pits, the primary concerns being root heaved, pavers uneven, and weeds.  In total, there were 138 deficits or concerns collected by community members in the East Ballard neighborhood on November 18th, 2006.  For a complete list of all the deficits collected during this survey, click here. Asset Findings:

Table 2 above lists the most frequently collected positive conditions (assets) organized by feature.  7 conditions were found in the sidewalk category; a majority of the sidewalk conditions indicated properly displayed sandwich boards and good & safe walking space.  There were 6 incidents collected on planting strips. 6 signage conditions were considered assets due to new parking signs installed.  There were also 5 incidents collected in crosswalk/ intersections category, the primary assets being clearly marked lines and pedestrian signals.  In total, there were 37 assets or opportunities collected by community members in the East Ballard neighborhood on November 18th, 2006.  These assets represent only one route, the other asset route will be completed at a later date.  For a complete list of all the assets collected during this survey, click here.
