Dream a Sound Future Competition. In 2009, Sustainable Seattle ventured into a new program area to envision a truly sustainable future for the Seattle/Puget Sound area and to define the transition steps to get there. This is a collaborative project of Sustainable Cascadia, SCALLOPS, Seattle Climate Partnership, Washington Lawyers for Sustainability, and Sustainable Seattle. The effort is collaborative, engaging cultural, economic, and environmental leaders of all ages and all walks of life in both the dream and design of a sustainable future for all. Far from a simple design competition, Dream a Sound Future engages diverse individuals and teams each year in envisioning the Seattle/Puget Sound area in the year 2100, as well as defining key transition steps in achieving their vision. Entrants are encouraged to think light-years outside the box in terms of what and how they present their ideas, ranging from paintings and performance art to architectural models and artificial intelligence. The K-12 Dream a Sound Future Competition is geared for the younger generations and intended to inspire and inform the community competition
STARs - Sustainability Training and Resources. The STARs program provides people with the skills and knowledge to make their lives, surroundings and workplaces more sustainable. We are pleased to be offering this service to our community. Integral to STARs is a deeply participatory based classes that build community and individual capacity to contribute towards sustainability in our region and on our globe.
STARS PALS program: Peer Alliance for Leadership in Sustainability. PALS is a network of professionals that are actively integrating sustainability into their work and organizations. Sustainable Seattle provides facilitators who are practiced in sustainability to coordinate these meetings. Organized by industry. PALS participants meet twice a year for an informal meeting hosted by a member of PALS and facilitated by Sustainable Seattle. 2010 PALS meetings will be held in early May and early November. The lessons learned and best practices from the meetings will be posted on this website.
K-12 Sustainability Education
Sustainable Seattle began offering K-12 education with our SUNI project, in 2004. Since then, we have developed two approaches for educating children and youth about sustainability. All approaches aim to inspire and empower children and youth to make a positive impact in their daily lives today and in their careers.
Design and Leadership Labs are fun, one hour sessions designed on a topic or industry and for a grade level. The labs are interactive and culminate in a group exercise that seeds the students with an understanding of their potential to influence and create positive change.
Choose to Change workshops in middle and high schools were funded from EPA Region 10 in 2008. We introduced a active-response technology to the workshop which make the sessions more interactive and allows us to assess learning.
BREATHE- Brokerage for Restoration of our Ecosystems and The Health of our Environments
A local ecosystem services brokerage provides a means for investors and service providers of ecosystem services to find each other. Investors, like the companies, family foundations and community groups, are provided verification that service providers are reliable and the ecosystem services they invest in are authentic and enduring. BREATHE functions in an intermediary role, facilitating interactions between investors and local service providers, providing investors a way to verify the authenticity, reliability and regulatory conformance of the service providers, as well as education about ecosystem services and local service providers
